This double CD collection cost me $75 when I bought it about 12 years ago but I saw it as an investment in my music collection. And what an investment it is, 40 wonderful tracks that chart the exotica output of legendary Les Baxter. These instrumental gems take you on a magic carpet ride to such far flung destinations as Hong Kong, Tehran, Bombay and Mozambique. My vocabulary doesn't stretch far enough to describe the music properly but what I can say is that the production is exceptional, you would never know these tracks are decades old. They burst out of the speakers and draw you into their web of adventure with a depth of sound rarely heard on exotica recordings.

Les truly was a musical powerhouse and is rightly considered to be in the same class as Mancini, Denny and Schifrin; his vast career was acknowledged with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. This collection would be an ideal starting point for anyone who is curious about exotica and the work of Les Baxter.
