With the amount of music I've bought/downloaded over the past few years it's been easy for some albums to get overlooked in my collection. "Flipper Psychout" is one such example but thankfully this post has given me a reason to fully immerse myself in the pleasures contain within this wonderful compilation.

What we have here are 26 tracks from insanely rare Italian library music labels such as Canopo, Deneb, Flirt and Octopus. The sound is completely removed from what most of us would associate with library music ( i.e KPM, DeWolfe, Telemusic etc.). The majority of tracks have elements of rock or jazz and as the title of the comp suggests there is also some excellent psychedelic moments to be found. From a production music standpoint it's hard to figure out how some of this music might have been used, due to the cinematic qualities at play it was probably more likely to find its way on to film scores rather than advertising or television.

"Scoctopus: The In Sound From Octopus Records" was my first ever library music purchase 15 odd years ago so it's no surprise that I love this compilation aswell given the similarities ( there's even a little bit of crossover between the two ). It's 70+ minutes of pure joy and an absolute must have for any library fan. Enjoy!

As promised here is the second part of my Alan Hawkshaw retrospective. There are plenty of classics to be found ( "Dave Allen At Large", Piccadilly Night Ride", "Name Of The Game", "Senor Thump" etc. ) along with some nice easy listening, electronic based numbers and a couple of short gems from KPM 1043: Beat Incidental. I'll try to keep this post short because I've been struggling with a headache all day. I've seen this album floating around a few different places and was keen to give a listen. Was a little unsure what a harp based record might sound like but I ended up being pleasantly surprised with just how good this was. It's essentially a collection of jazz based tracks with a strong bossa / exotica feel to much of the music. Even with my headache I was compelled to listen from start to finish and found myself being entertained throughout. Awesome!

The Star Maidens soundtrack was high on my list of CD's to import going back about 13 years ago but there always seemed to be something I'd purchase ahead of it. As time went by I completely forgot about this collection and it wasn't until I was surfing the net a few weeks ago that I saw a picture of the cover and my mind was jogged. Of course I had to have it and now you get to benefit aswell!

Here's some info about Star Maidens from Wikipedia...

"The series offered a battle of the sexes/role reversal scenario in which two male domestics escape from the female-ruled planet Medusa, land on Earth and are pursued by the Medusan security forces. When the Medusans fail to recapture the two men, they take two Earth hostages - a man and a woman - back with them to their home planet. The thirteen episodes of the series deal with the two groups trying to adapt to life on the different planets whilst brokering an exchange for the hostages.

Regarded as something of a camp novelty, Star Maidens tuned in to the sexual equality revolution of the time, and features some Femdom elements. The series shares some similarities with the British sci-fi series Space: 1999, which was in production at the same time."

The soundtrack by Berry Lipman is off the charts funky and sounds like the scenesetter to a porn star party on the moon. Go go grooves and sleazy funk combine with German language sound grabs from the show to create a sublime mix. Just like his equally creative countryman Pete Thomas, Lipman was also a dab hand when it came to utilising electronic elements and there are some excellent examples featured here. Occasional moments of easy listening also break up the insanity nicely with "Earth Romance" being a stand out.

I could list my favourite tracks but I'd be here all day. The crazy drumming, organ solos, suggestive vocal numbers and lush funk all hit the spot with me and I'm sure many of you will feel the same way. It's a soundtrack that is the very definition of a funky frolic. Don't delay - go get it!!!

It's been a while since I posted any British library music but I hope this record makes up for it! Any collaboration between Hawkshaw and Bennett should be considered a must have and here they combine their renowned composing skills with a selection of electronic instruments. The results range from novelty ( "Dumbo", "Jolly Roger" ) to much more satisfying funk infused numbers such as "Oddball", "Daytripper", "Auto-Pilot" and the two excellent versions of "Mile High Swingers". A few of these tracks have found their way on to various compilations over the years and for good reason.

I know this has been posted up elsewhere but I really wanted to complete the trilogy of "Sport" library records ( the other two being "Sport News" and "Sport Music Vol.1" ). This volume contains an unusual mix of jazz, disco and electronic elements with the result being a library music collection unlike anything I have heard before. It comes off sounding like a middle ground between Bernard Fevre and an early 80's Bruton which hopefully peaks your interest.

The jazzier moments provide the biggest highlights in my opinion, tracks such as "Cachemire Reve", "Resultats", "Petite Pause", "Assouplissements" and "Commentaires" sparkle with vibes, organ and piano playing a major role. I'm kind of curious as to what connection any of this music has to sport but either way you can chalk this record up for a W! Many thanks to The Growing Bin for the link.

This is a lovely collection of melodic pop tunes from Georges Rodi that features plenty of drum machines, synths and moog. The highlights for my mind are the fun muzak stylings of "Sand Rose" along with "Superpositions" which sounds like an insane computer's interpretation of a Piero Umiliani track. Roger Roger and Jean-Jacques Perrey enthusiasts should enjoy this one most of all. Thanks to the original uploader.

Sven Libaek penned this soundtrack to the Australian television show "Boney" back in 1971. Here is a little bit of information about the program care of Wikipedia...

"Boney is an Australian television series produced by Fauna Productions during 1971 and 1972, featuring James Laurenson in the title role of Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte. There were two series made of twenty six episodes in total.

The series was centred on Bonaparte, a half-Australian Aboriginal character, created by Arthur Upfield, who wrote twenty nine novels about him from 1929 until Upfield's death in 1964.

While Bonaparte was "Bony" in the novels, the TV series was titled "Boney" - Arthur Upfield had told the show's producer John McCallum that a printer’s error in the first book had misspelled the name and he'd been stuck with it ever since. Tie-in reprints of the novels at the time used the title "Boney", though - as old printing plates were used - Bonaparte was still "Bony" inside.

Bony has a Master's Degree in forensic science from the fictitious "Brisbane University". His father, name unknown, was white. His Aboriginal mother was murdered while he was still an infant.^"

The soundtrack is filled with Sven's unique take on easy listening pop with the occasional diversion into funkier territory. The use of vibes is particularly effective, raising the likes of "Wild Formations", "The Fight" and "Love Theme" to a whole different level. It's a great record to listen to on a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Another little tidbit I picked up at the Wikipedia page was that disco group Boney M was named after this television character. You learn something new every day!

This compilation contains a bunch of upbeat lounge / jazz tracks featuring plenty of brass, organ and wah wah. The performances by Birds & Brass are particularly nice and include a couple of groovy covers in the form of "Theme From Shaft" and "American Woman". The tracks by Chris Karen are more laid back and airy with "Mojave" been my personal fav and Pete Moore contributes a couple of swinging numbers mid album. I actually thought this was going to be a library comp prior to downloading and despite that not being the case I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. Top stuff.

Those of you who have been visiting Funky Frolic for a while will be aware of my adoration for Shawn Lee and this album is another example of his fine work. Lee takes all the best elements of 1970's library music ( breakbeats, deep bass, porn grooves, tripped out electronics etc. ) and then turns out sublime funk fueled nuggets. The hard-as-nails drumming will probably be the first thing that hits you while listening to these tracks but the heavy beats are complimented skillfully by keyboards, guitar, bongos, sitar and a range of other instruments.

Much of the music would be right at home on a sleazy 70's OST from Italy or the U.S, however unlike soundtrack music these pieces are kept super tight with only a couple of tracks going beyond two and a half minutes. Those of you with keen ears will also identify the occasional library sample slipped in along the way ( "Electric Tit" comes to mind ). If you haven't got on the Shawn Lee bandwagon yet then check this record out and jump aboard!

This a super, super, super groovy collection of library music featured on The Price Is Right during the 1970's. I'm not sure where the music was originally sourced from or who the composers were but fans of Syd Dale, Alan Moorhouse and James Clarke should be in heaven listening to this. Horns and flutes play a prominent role in most of the tracks and they are underlayed by frenetic drumming and funky wah wah guitar. I dare you to resist the incredible "Starcrossed", "Dig We Must" or "The Bean Stalker" or the more subtle pop charms of "Deja Vu" and "Rye Bread 2". The combination of uptempo British go go grooves and down and dirty U.S funk is what makes the majority of this music so desirable and fun. A compilation truly deserving of 10 out of 10 Frolics!

This enjoyable but rather long compilation was put together by Winchester Hospital Radio and features a large amount of uptempo easy listening and jazzy big band tracks. If you are a fan of Laurie Johnson or the "Music For TV Dinners" compilations then you'll eat this stuff up, while there is no Laurie to be had the likes of Syd Dale and Ray Davies provide many wonderful moments. Some of the quirkier tracks prove to be the most interesting with the standouts being "El Hombre Soul", "It Takes Nine To Mambo" and "Little Risdale". All in all I would have liked a bit more diversity in this collection but there's no doubting the skill of these composers and the quality of the music.

The Cordara Orchestra is another member of the Italian rare groove club along with the likes of the Barigozzi Group, I Gres, I Marc 4, Arawak, Freedom Power, Blue Sharks and Pulsar Music Ltd. Ably led by Carlo Cordara, you will find plenty of the prerequisite organ, piano and flute combined with laid back guitar and restrained drumming. Pleasingly there are a number of tracks that fall into the category of crime jazz with the best examples being "Hypotesis" ( a misspelling of hypothesis I presume ) and the two versions of "Target". The occasional moments of funk such as opening number "Tipsy" are most welcome and add another dimension to this very impressive compilation. You can also find several Cordara Orchestra tracks scattered through the Mo'Plen series which can be found in my compilations section.

There is no mistaking the Barigozzi Group sound. Super tight compositions featuring laid back jazz grooves and seriously funky drumming are taken to another level by Giancarlo Barigozzi's flute performances. A number of these tracks feature on the Easy Tempo compilation "The Optical Sound" and mysteriously this rip contains four extra tracks which I can only presume come from either the album "Rock In The Air" or "Urubamba" ( under the band name The Tropicals ). This album really is Italian rare groove heaven and it's no surprise that these 1970's recordings continue to be so popular today ( and costly if you wish to buy an original copy ). If you are interested in artists with a similar vibe I would suggest checking out "Scoctopus: The In Sound From Octopus Records".

Sometimes it's good to be reminded that library music records were never produced with the intention of being heard from start to finish. Take for example "Earth Shaker" which jerks wildly from track to track between funk, easy listening, quirky electronics, pop and a whole lot more. It certainly presents a challenging journey for the listener but there are plenty of rewards along the way. I tend to gravitate more towards the harder / funky side of things so "Black Bison", "Earth Shaker", "Aqua Perambulator" and the wickedly fun "Sexibition" ( go the cowbell! ) all rate highly with me. "Intimations" is also quite an interesting track and some of you might recognise it from "Nuggets: Luke Vibert's Selection".  Due to the wide range of styles on offer this album almost serves as a library compilation and I'm sure you will find music of interest somewhere within its 16 tracks.

Several years ago Jonny Trunk put out an excellent book of library music cover art which also came with a very tasty compilation of rare library tracks. Long time Funky Frolicker Tex sent me a message that he'd bought the book but it arrived minus the bonus CD. They must have sold out or something. Whatever the reason, I just happen to have a digital copy of the collection so here it is for your listening pleasure...

Those of you familiar with Trunk's taste will know what to expect, it's a diverse set of music in the same mould as "The Super Sounds Of Bosworth". One track in particular that should be highlighted is the hypnotic afro / jazz rhythms of "Kermesse Non Heroique" by Guy Pedersen which clocks in at a truly epic 13 mins. 18 secs. Janko Nilovic also makes an appearence under the rather unimaginative alias of Yanko Nilovic along with Sauveur Mallia, Basil Kirchin, Delia Derbyshire and Pierre Dutour. With a line up like that it's no wonder this collection is a winner.

I first came into contact with Godchild through the excellent "La Tete Qui Bout" which features on the "La Guepe Vol.4" compilation. Here is the original album from which that track was sourced and I am happy to report that the rest of the music is of a similarly high quality. The words "holy grail" are thrown around quite a bit in library music / rare groove circles but it's fair to say that "Godchild" qualifies for this compliment alongside other classics such as "Under Pompelmo" by Giuliano Sorgini and "Accadde A" by Arawak. Released in 1972 or 1975 depending on who you ask, it contains some thrilling breakbeats, jazzy horns and plenty of well executed electric piano along with a couple of vocal numbers. There are numerous tempo changes that keep the listener on their toes while still maintaining a consistently cool vibe throughout.

This record was re-released in 2002 by Kid Loco, or at the very least it contains three remixes by him. You can download those remixes here. Thankfully that re-release exists because otherwise you would need to shell out hundreds of dollars for an original copy ( I saw one on the internet go for $685 U.S ). Everything that is good about Janko Nilovic is contained within this wonderful record from the Montparnasse 2000 library. You never quite know where he will take a composition and as with much of his work there is a sexual undercurrent that at times borders on porn groove. Most of the tracks are up tempo with wah wah and horns playing a major part, a prime example being the tour de force that is "Hocus Pocus". Even on a more laid back number like "Summer Summer" Janko can't help himself, launching into some slammin' funk at the 1 min 17 sec mark. The rip I have contains some pops here and there but really, who cares when you are faced with such musical perfection!?

This is a collection of music contained on EZZZY 105, a mock radio station featured in the video game Saints Row 2. There's a lot of South American and easy listening grooves with a few quirky little nuggets thrown in for good measure. The general mood is lighthearted and fun ( "Jarabe Tapatio" and "Coconuts" being prime examples ), some of my personal favourites would be the lush strings and breathless vocals on "Just Strolling Around", the big band sounds of "Bossa Cubana" and the begging-to-be-sampled "Colonie Celeste" by Jean-Jacques Perrey.

If you are looking for the funkier side of computer game soundtracks I'd probably recommend you download "Bully OST" or "GTA IF 99" but if you're even remotely interested in lounge / easy music then you should definitely give this a go. Thanks to Bret for giving me the heads up on this collection.

After a little bit of searching I have located the Sven Libaek album that contains "Misty Canyon". Released through the Peer International Library this is slightly more laid back than "Solar Flares", most of the tracks having a guitar base with horns, vibes and/or flute layered over the top. The music is great and the Australian references in the song titles certainly add to the appeal for me ( "Indian Pacific" I presume refers to the train which travels between Sydney and Perth, a journey of 4,352 kilometres. Also, "Highway No.1" is the road that circuits the entire coastline of Australia making it the longest highway in the world. )

It's probably wrong of me to make comparisons but some of this work reminds me of the great James Clarke, the music is probably best described as easy listening but there is so much going on beneath the surface.
