TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

This is probably going to be a rambling post so bear with me.

Today is Funky Frolic's 2nd anniversary. It has been an incredible journey filled with many ups and downs but the time has come for me to say farewell and move on. It's not a decision I've made lightly but many of the things that have happened this year have sucked the fun out blogging. The file sharing issues and subsequent flood of re-requests took away the time and desire I had to create new content and I just couldn't muster the dedication that this place requires.

There are so many people I'd like to thank - from my fellow bloggers to all the wonderful people who left comments that would bring a smile to my face, friends and strangers alike. I've been lucky to have a group of supporters who helped make Funky Frolic what it is and it's been a joy to be part of a community of like-minded music lovers. Thank you all so much.

I feel like I've achieved everything I wanted here. The aim was always to celebrate the music I enjoy and bring it to the widest audience possible. I think that over the course of the last two years I've played my part in fostering the appreciation of certain genres amongst people. Around 7 or 8 terabytes of music have been downloaded through Funky Frolic and it's a thrill to know people have listened to albums I've recommended or mixes that I've created. I couldn't have imagined something I created would receive a million pageviews on the internet, let alone almost two million. It's been a wild ride and one I'll never forget.

I will leave the site up in case I have a change of heart and can't stay away or if I have a new project you might be interested in. I'll lock the comments function in a couple of weeks. You can contact me through my Blogger profile if you wish but please refrain from making music requests. I apologise to those who have outstanding re-up requests, I hope you are able to find what you're looking for somewhere else.

I just want to say first off that I'm very sorry about the lack of posts recently, I've had a few other things keeping me busy. I'll be off on a holiday in a week or so and hopefully I'll come back reinvigorated.

"The Man From O.R.G.A.N" is a seriously fun little record put out by Dick Hyman back in the mid 60's. It features a collection of spy related cover songs that are given the full Hyman organ treatment and the results are a real joy. The combination of spy jazz mixed with easy listening and exotica produces a smooth and rather unique listening experience that should please many of you who've not yet come into contact with this great album. I was thinking about posting the excellent "BBC Sporting Themes" but came across this album which has plenty of crossover and a further 10 tracks. These themes will be ingrained in the minds of many UK sports fans but I'm sure some of the tracks has popped up in broadcasts throughout the world over the years. With the likes of Doug Wood, Brian Bennett, Mike Vickers and Tony Hatch featured you can be assured of a swinging good time and the various orchestras / bands add a hefty dose of pomp and circumstance to proceedings. Excellent!

A real beast of a library record, this De Wolfe release takes you on a trip back in time to a world where monster movies were all the rage! You can expect plenty of expansive and overwrought orchestration mixed with theremin and a few other unusual instruments. To be honest I hadn't heard much of Pierre Arvay's work prior to this record ( apart from a few tracks he contributed to Dr.Who ) but I was very impressed by what I heard. Other composers such as Camille Sauvage, Simon Park and Peter Reno should be more familiar to library fans and they provide some great tracks. This album should appeal to those interested in soundtrack music or the Bruton BRM series. Many thanks to pixel_face for passing this one on to me.

"Sex, Sleaze And Soul" does for porn films and R rated flicks what "Super Bad, Super Black" did for blaxploitation. It's a compilation of naughty, silly radio spots and previews which focuses the spotlight on the seedier side of 1970's film culture. Aside from the highly amusing porn movie advertisements there are promos for kung fu, horror and action movies along with a couple that cover blaxploitation such as "That Man Bolt: Spot 2". What pushes this collection over the top from great to awesome is the inclusion of a bunch of theme songs that are the epitome of classic porn groove. It's a great listen and a whole lot of sexy fun!

I couldn't find a video that quite captured the essence of this collection so I decided to make one of my own. Hope you enjoy my first foray into the world of YouTube...

Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons were a staple of my childhood and teenage years. Even back then I was aware of the musical genius involved in bringing these animated stories to life. This collection focuses entirely on works composed by Stalling, so Raymond Scott misses out. I will presume that most of you have at least a passing knowledge of Looney Tunes and therefore know exactly what you're getting yourself in to - lots of quirky, joyous orchestral works and SFX. A truly wonderful compilation of music that is as vibrant and lively as it was 60+ years ago.

The Star Maidens soundtrack was high on my list of CD's to import going back about 13 years ago but there always seemed to be something I'd purchase ahead of it. As time went by I completely forgot about this collection and it wasn't until I was surfing the net a few weeks ago that I saw a picture of the cover and my mind was jogged. Of course I had to have it and now you get to benefit aswell!

Here's some info about Star Maidens from Wikipedia...

"The series offered a battle of the sexes/role reversal scenario in which two male domestics escape from the female-ruled planet Medusa, land on Earth and are pursued by the Medusan security forces. When the Medusans fail to recapture the two men, they take two Earth hostages - a man and a woman - back with them to their home planet. The thirteen episodes of the series deal with the two groups trying to adapt to life on the different planets whilst brokering an exchange for the hostages.

Regarded as something of a camp novelty, Star Maidens tuned in to the sexual equality revolution of the time, and features some Femdom elements. The series shares some similarities with the British sci-fi series Space: 1999, which was in production at the same time."

The soundtrack by Berry Lipman is off the charts funky and sounds like the scenesetter to a porn star party on the moon. Go go grooves and sleazy funk combine with German language sound grabs from the show to create a sublime mix. Just like his equally creative countryman Pete Thomas, Lipman was also a dab hand when it came to utilising electronic elements and there are some excellent examples featured here. Occasional moments of easy listening also break up the insanity nicely with "Earth Romance" being a stand out.

I could list my favourite tracks but I'd be here all day. The crazy drumming, organ solos, suggestive vocal numbers and lush funk all hit the spot with me and I'm sure many of you will feel the same way. It's a soundtrack that is the very definition of a funky frolic. Don't delay - go get it!!!

A monster batch of 1970's Italian crime funk! These 18 nuggets have been sourced from various releases, mostly on the Cinevox and Beat labels and a couple of tracks come from Goblin films. As you'd expect there is much wah wah, breakbeats, horns and super deep bass but interestingly there's also a number of different electronic elements at play. The likes of "Blazing Magnum", "New Special Squad" and "La Via Della Droga" exhibit an effortless brilliance and a timeless quality which is so often present with top shelf Italian soundtrack music.

The breakneck "Trumpet's Flight" is interesting because it comes off sounding like a sped up version of something you might find on a jazz funk themed Bruton album. "Napoli Si Ribella" is also worth mentioning because of it having a strange amalgamation of disco, funk and soundtrack epicness that certainly makes for compelling listening.

This is a super collection of Jerry Cotton film music produced by the German king of groove, Peter Thomas. It features his recognisable hard swinging style of crime jazz which suits this project perfectly but there are also a few tracks which are more in line with what you'd expect to hear in a retro cocktail lounge ( "Two Voices Blues", "Take It Jerry!" and "Party Is Over" come to mind ). I'm not usually a fan of the whole breathy, wordless female vocal style but it works quite well here, particularly on the insane "Crime Doesn't Pay" which combines together three distinctive pieces of music onto the one track. If you enjoy this collection then go and hunt down "100% Cotton" which contains a whopping 49 additional songs. Thanks to the original uploader.

Captain Future was an animated series that was broadcast in Japan during the late 1970's. It was soon distributed to a number of different countries including Germany where the decision was made to create a new soundtrack from scratch. Christian Bruhn was charged with the task of creating the score and the results have reached cult status with animation and soundtrack fans along with DJ's.

The music is mixture of electro funk, space disco, jazz and Bruton-esque library grooves which certainly speaks of the time it was recorded but there are also a handful of funky nuggets scattered thoughout. For me the standouts were "Eingeborene!", "Ken". the danceable "Vor Dem Start" and the ahead of it's time techno beats on "Der Böse". The most well known piece on the record is indeed the title track but I'm not a huge fan of it ( incidently I believe it is Bruhn's wife providing the female vocals ). I'm not sure what you'll make of this, it has the potential to be a love it or hate it proposition. I hope you love it though.

I Marc 4 are joined by Peppino De Luca on this 1971 soundtrack to the film "L'uomo Dagli Occhi Di Ghiaccio" which translates in English to "Man With Icy Eyes". With a title like that it's no wonder the music is firmly based in dark, foreboding spy jazz but there is still room for some typical early 70's Italian grooves on tracks such as "Corsa Mortale", "Falso Testimone" and "Il Killer". A few softer moments such as "Unisex" add variety to the mix and overall it is a quality record by a fantastic band. For further listening check out I Marc 4's "I Solisti Di Armando Trovajoli".

David Holmes is best known for his soundtrack work, in particular Out Of Sight, Oceans Eleven and the subsequent sequels. This record from 1997 sees him developing his trademark sound while incorporating spoken word excerpts from drug dealers, prostitutes and other curious souls inhabiting the New York underground. It's a bizarre mix but one that is ably handled by Holmes and further strengthened by interpretations of the James Bond theme music and "Don't Die Just Yet" by Serge Gainsbourg. A couple of these tracks ended up on the Oceans Eleven score in altered forms, namely "Gritty Shaker" and "Rodney Yates" ( which sadly doesn't appear on the OST ).

This is a 1993 re-release of Billy May's 1966 soundtrack to the television show The Green Hornet and includes 7 additional tracks not on the original release. Some of the bonus material raises eyebrows, I'm not sure if the Batman theme or "Adagio In G Minor" have much relevance to The Green Hornet and their inclusion here seems more like a marketing ploy than anything else.

The music itself is generally a mix of big band, jazz and some lounge elements with the main exception being the aforementioned  "Adagio In G Minor" which is a profound piece of classical music that certainly adds weight to the whole collection ( it should be familiar to most people due to it's use in countless films and television programs ). Fans of the Ultra Lounge series should find plenty of enjoyment with tracks like "Kato", "Four Hornets" and "Black Beauty" all displaying a groovy charm. It's a bit full on at times but I guess you have to expect that with this kind of soundtrack. However,  the fact that there has been a number of reissues gives an indication of the underlying quality inherent in these compositions.

I just stumbled on this and had to post it up. As the title suggests, "The Man With Dusty Fingers" is a collection of cinematic music which incorporates heavy doses of library music and rare groove a la the Dusty Fingers compilations, along with some very heavy beats. I won't lie, this record is hit and miss but the hits are good enough to make it more than worthwhile downloading. Tracks like "Break In", "Hypnosis", "Oh Oui" and "The Man With Dusty Fingers" all stand up to scrutiny, with the latter making good use of "Night Moves" by Frank McDonald. Go check it out...

This is another in a long line of fake soundtracks put out in the late 1990's ( i.e - "Pornosonic", "Soul Ecstasy", "Logan's Sanctuary" and "The Revenge Of Mister Mopoji" ). The music is a mix of surf rock, spy jazz and swing with some vocals thrown in along the way. Highlights include the slow burning title track and the gorgeous Pell Mell-esque "Rum Holiday". Most of the tracks are bombastic, fun and very tongue in cheek but the execution is good enough to avoid any kind of kitschness. If you own a zoot suit then listening to this record might be the ideal time to liberate it from the wardrobe.

Sven Libaek penned this soundtrack to the Australian television show "Boney" back in 1971. Here is a little bit of information about the program care of Wikipedia...

"Boney is an Australian television series produced by Fauna Productions during 1971 and 1972, featuring James Laurenson in the title role of Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte. There were two series made of twenty six episodes in total.

The series was centred on Bonaparte, a half-Australian Aboriginal character, created by Arthur Upfield, who wrote twenty nine novels about him from 1929 until Upfield's death in 1964.

While Bonaparte was "Bony" in the novels, the TV series was titled "Boney" - Arthur Upfield had told the show's producer John McCallum that a printer’s error in the first book had misspelled the name and he'd been stuck with it ever since. Tie-in reprints of the novels at the time used the title "Boney", though - as old printing plates were used - Bonaparte was still "Bony" inside.

Bony has a Master's Degree in forensic science from the fictitious "Brisbane University". His father, name unknown, was white. His Aboriginal mother was murdered while he was still an infant.^"

The soundtrack is filled with Sven's unique take on easy listening pop with the occasional diversion into funkier territory. The use of vibes is particularly effective, raising the likes of "Wild Formations", "The Fight" and "Love Theme" to a whole different level. It's a great record to listen to on a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Another little tidbit I picked up at the Wikipedia page was that disco group Boney M was named after this television character. You learn something new every day!

I'm ashamed to say that I have long ignored this record simply because I didn't like the look of the cover. Therefore I have come to the Lesiman party a little late, but as they say in the classics "better late than never". Lesiman ( real name Paolo Renosto ) released a clutch of library albums in the 1970's on legendary Italian label Vendette and they are the basis for this compilation. Drama, intrigue and suspense abound through these 21 tracks but in typical Italian style there is also a very distinctive dream like quality that draws the listener in. Obviously if you are a fan of soundtrack or library music then you've probably long since discovered the joys of Lesiman but if you are new to the game or have just been a fool like me then get on board!

I first came into contact with Blue Phantom through "Diodo" which was featured on the "Phase 6 Super Stereo" compilation. Here for your pleasure is the original album from which that track was sourced. It's quite an interesting set, there's a distinctive heavy psych rock sound but it is complimented by library and soundtrack-esque moods which are in line with its early 1970's Italian heritage. In fact several of these tracks found their way on to the Jess Franco film "Sinner: Diary of a Nymphomaniac". This was originally released on Spider Records, an offshoot of the Vendette label which was founded by Armando Sciascia. And who is the mastermind behind this collection? Mr. Sciascia himself. It's wild stuff and well worth checking out. Thanks to the original uploader.

I've been playing around with this compilation on and off for a couple of months now and even though it's a bit rough around the edges I thought it was time to set it free from my hard drive. Aside from some interesting theme songs and vintage commercials I have included a number of cool indents, station ID's, public service announcements and general weirdness. Highlights include a "medieval" version of "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix and some very funky themes courtesy of Mannix, Wheel Of Fortune, Airwolf and Magnum P.I. On the commercial side of things there is some quality obscurity in the form of a Spanish language Jack In The Box jingle, Diet Coke's first introduction to the public and some truly demented performances on the 1978 Big Mac ad. I had to include "Victoria Bitter" because it is arguably the most iconic commercial ever on Australian television.

My pick of the bunch from the other tracks would be the BBC election coverage music which seems to generate an inexplicable emotional resonance whenever I hear it. When I release a mix it's always good to get some feedback so please take the time to leave a message if you choose to download this. It should be noted that due the variation in age and sources for this material there are differences in sound quality from track to track.
