Here is another release in the excellent Ultra Lounge collection which is jam packed full of super easy and exotica delights. The inclusion of a number of Les Baxter tunes should be a good sign as to the quality of this record, elsewhere there is "Power House" which will be familiar to Bugs Bunny fans, particularly swinging versions of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and "Puttin' On The Ritz" are welcome additions and the other-worldly "Satan Takes A Holiday" is a simple but compelling piece of organ groove. This compilation comes off sounding a bit like a U.S version of "Music For T.V Dinners" except...spacier. The mix of well known music and oddities along with the quirkiness on offer is reason enough to grab a cocktail, fill up the pipe and have a foot tappingly good time.

A weird and wonderful gem from German composer Peter Thomas! This 1975 record comes off sounding like the perfect music for a dance party on Mars, it has a funk / jazz sound that is utterly unique and incorporates a range of unusual electronic and industrial noises which keep the listener on their feet.  The most noticeable features on the album are the crisp drumming and the big band-esque horns but there is also some excellent guitar work. To be honest any description I give will be flawed because Peter's style really deserves a genre all of it's own, however what I can say is that listening to this record is a thoroughly worthwhile trip into 70's German grooviness.

I just discovered that Peter Thomas also produced the soundtrack to the Bruce Lee film "The Big Boss" so I will endeavour to post that here sometime in the near future. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this wild collection.

This outstanding selection of Grant Green tracks is easily one of my favourite albums of all time. Released back in the late 90's on the world famous Blue Note label, it contains some of the very best work from Green's illustrious career and most of the cuts will be instantly recognisable. It's worth getting this record for "Ain't It Funky Now" alone but everything else is awesome too, the production is also key with the instruments all at a perfect level to give maximum listening pleasure. The music bursts out of the speakers, takes hold of you and wont let go, even during the epic 11 minutes of "Sookie Sookie" there is no escaping the hypnotism of the groove. It truly is a must have album and a perfect companion piece to Jimmy McGriff's "Electric Funk".

Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek pushes all the right buttons in terms of capturing that feeling of adventure and exploring the unknown which are trademarks of the ST movies. Track 1 is practically a soundtrack in itself considering the amount of musical territory it covers over the course of 7 minutes. "The Cloud" and "Vejur Flyover" both impress me with their restrained, foreboding characteristics, "Leaving Drydock" is a good example of Goldsmith's use of light and shade and "The Meld" has all the hallmarks of quality space themed music.

This soundtrack is probably held in higher regard by Star Trek fans than hardcore Goldsmith aficionados but it has plenty to offer the casual listener too.

Oh wow! This is one hell of a psych / rock / funk / jazz / atmospheric Italian freakout from 1972. Rampant drum breaks and hallucinogenic guitars are showcased on tracks such as "Posizione R", "Shuum", "Tredicesimo" and "Spunti Dall". There are a couple of vocal numbers and quieter moments but it's the full-on nature of most of the album that drives me wild. It's unlike any other Italian OST I've heard and I'm not surprised that this record has come up on the radar of crate diggers ( "Preludio" has been sampled by someone but I can't put my finger on who ). The production qualities also add to the enjoyability of this unique and unusual delight, which is another reason why you should take the opportunity to download this and get your freak on to the wild grooves.

This curious library record from 1970 was released on the obscure Italian label Squirrel. Possessing a sound all of it's own, "Acadde A" has found favour with such hip hop performers as Quasimoto (Madlib) who have used samples from this album.

It's a music voyage that takes in Bali, Lima, Las Vegas and more, "Belfast" in particular stands out and almost qualifies as hip hop in it's own right with it's wicked drum breaks and ingenious use of bagpipes. "Yellow Park" is also a rare groove delight and "Harlem" has been comped on "Suono Libero Vol.2". While it may not offer the same immediacy that is prevalent in other Italian LP's of the same period, it has many qualities which will continue to endure long into the future.

The title of this totally cool compilation should really be "Music For A 1950's New York Shopping Spree" because that is the emotional response I get listening to these groovy delights. Some of the tracks remind me of music that has been used on The Simpsons ( Homer's land of chocolate fantasy? ), it's a fast paced and kitsch collection with more than a bit in common with elevator muzak. Laurie Johnson's work just sparkles with "Happy Go Lively" being the standout in my opinion. Other highlight include "Trafficscape" by Eric Winstone, "Bargains Galore" by Stuart Combie & Dennis Berry and the swinging "Stop Gap" by Wilfred Burns". As with "Music For T'V Dinners: The 60's" the set culminates with a Johnny Pearson classic.

This CD is a fun ride from start to finish and will appeal to library music, easy listening and lounge fans in equal measure. The download link is courtesy of Bryan's Lounge.

To be honest I had never heard of Lollywood ( Lahore + Hollywood ) before discovering this unusual compilation. Pakistan's version of Bollywood clearly spawned some interesting films if the music they used is any indication. This set mainly revolves around the work of M.Ashraf, Kamal Ahmed and Tafo, with vocals provided by Nahid Akhtar. The tagline for this record is "Rare Electronic Pop From The Lollywood Vaults 1973-1980" and indeed there is plenty of interesting electronic experimentation incorporated into the more traditional elements. The music is certainly an acquired taste but if you've got an open mind and want to diversify your tastes then it's well worth the trip. Thanks to the original uploader.

These 19 Sesame Street themed tracks have been collected from a number of unusual sources. Some are taken from the 70+ official releases that have been put out over the years, others have been donated by supporters of Funky Frolic (Budd and Mike via Frayker) and the last few songs come from my own collection. The Roosevelt Franklin album is an interesting one, he was a short lived jive-talking character that was shown the door because of the potential bad influence he might have on children. There is a few disco themed SS records and I have included some of those tracks here plus there is a bonus comedy bit by Paul F. Tompkins to finish proceedings. If there is enough requests I might be encouraged to post some of the albums I used to put this compilation together.

"Piombo Rovente" is another of those records that I waited many years to get ahold of and I wasn't disappointed! Released on the excellent Plastic label it is a comprehensive look back on the music that played a key role in the success of Italian crime films during the 1970's. Consisting of endless driving beats, wah wah grooves, funky flute and much more, there is something for everyone over the course of 70 irresistible minutes. Outside of blaxploitation, no one did cinematic funk better than the Italians and the highlights are many and varied. "The Blue Boat" goes from jazz, to big band, to orchestral within it's 2 minute length, the frenetic drumming of "Gangster Story" will leave you breathless, "Affanno" is library funk at it's best and "Running To The Airport" is a real nugget.

Fans of this genre will most likely be very familiar with the works here but for everyone else it provides a wonderful starting point for exploring the world of Italian OST's. This is one of the most well known library music compilations and it delivers a nifty batch of easy / pop groovers from the likes of Hawkshaw, Dale and Mansfield. Personal favs include the swirling "Rio Magic", "Sporting Highlights", the spy jazz inspired "Chase That Car" and the dreamy "Convenience Shopping". I would suggest that most of these tracks are from KPM's but a few may be from Syd Dale's Amphonic label. It's probably unfair to draw a comparison between this music and t.v dinners because I think it has more in common with champagne and caviar. Just make sure you eat up otherwise there will be no dessert!
